Bog oak is ordinary Irish oak that fell into peat bogs thousands of years ago. The acidic, oxygen-poor conditions of the bog prevented the wood from rotting. Over millennia, tannins in the oak reacted with minerals in the bog water, slowly turning the wood deep black and making it denser and harder than living oak.
A piece around 7,000 years old began life when Ireland was still covered in dense forests and the first hunter-gatherers lived here. By the time the Great Pyramid of Giza was built, this oak was already roughly 2,500 years old. It was nearly 4,000 years old at the time of the Trojan War, over 5,000 years old when the Roman Empire rose and Christianity was born,and now its uncovered and handcrafted into jewellery just for you
